How to know if you have (irreversible) hair loss?

Scarring is the destruction of the hair follicle, and apart from a few rare exceptions such as cicatricial alopecia, it typically doesn't occur in the early stages of hair loss. On the contrary, having bald spots where hair hasn't grown in a long time may be a sign of scarring and therefore irreversible hair loss. To get an accurate diagnosis, we always recommend seeking medical advice. Customers with a subscription including the Bio-Pilixin® Serum can also speak with our certified trichologist who can help them make the most of our products.

Causes of hair loss

Stress

Stress-related hair loss tends to resolve on its own once the stressful event is over. That said, Bio-Pilixin® may be an effective aid in growing your hair back and maintaining its strength long term.

Genetics

Genetic hair loss cannot be prevented or reversed, but it may be delayed with the appropriate treatment when started in the early stages. Preliminary research on Bio-Pilixin® suggests that it can help balance the hair growth cycle, and therefore may be an effective aid in managing genetic hair loss.

Types of hair loss

Male pattern hair loss (MPHL)

MPHL is often caused by caused by a combination of hormonal and genetic factors, and is characterised by thinning on the crown of the head and receding hairlines. MPHL cannot be prevented or reversed, but it may be delayed with the appropriate treatment when started in the early stages. Preliminary research on Bio-Pilixin® suggests that it can help balance the hair growth cycle, and therefore may be an effective aid in managing MPHL.

Thinning on top and crown of head

Hair loss on the top and crown of the head is likely due to Male Pattern Hair Loss, which is caused by a combination of genetic factors and the effects of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Receding hairline

A receding hairline is also caused by Male Pattern Hair Loss most of the time, where the balding can start at the temples which then usually develops into a distinct “M” shape.

Patchy bald spots

When sudden hair loss results in coin-sized bald patches, it is usually caused by alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease causing the immune system to attack the hair follicles. Both men and women can experience this type of hair loss, and in most cases, the hair grows back by itself. Alopecia areata doesn’t have a cure but there are treatments that can help manage the condition including steroid injections, topical and oral medications. Bio-Pilixin® has not been tested on individuals with alopecia areata. However, it may be a useful addition to treatments known to improve the condition. If you’re considering the use of Bio-Pilixin® for alopecia areata, we recommend speaking to your medical provider first.

Diffuse thinning & visible scalp

Diffuse hair loss is characterised by shedding across the entire scalp leading to a “see-through” appearance, and it can be caused by a number of reasons. Telogen effluvium (triggered by an acute traumatic event), thyroid issues, iron deficiency anemia, malnutrition, rapid weight loss or low vitamin D levels. While this is a typical pattern in Female Pattern Hair Loss, in men, it usually indicates one of the above issues rather than Male Pattern Hair Loss.

Drugs and other hair loss treatments

Prescription hair‑loss medication

There is no specific trial data on the combined use of our Bio‑Pilixin® serum with doctor‑prescribed oral treatments. However, both products generally serve different functions in supporting hair health, and there are no known contraindications when used together. We still recommend consulting your healthcare provider to get personalised advice tailored to your specific needs.

Minoxidil

Bio-Pilixin® has not been tested for use alongside minoxidil, therefore, we cannot state whether it’s safe or effective when applied together. If ever in doubt, we recommend consulting an accredited healthcare professional.

Hair transplant

Hair transplant is an invasive surgical procedure, which may require several weeks of recovery time where the scalp might be red, swollen, and particularly sensitive. Therefore, we do not recommend using Bio-Pilixin® after this procedure without consulting your doctor. We have received feedback from customers who have had hair transplants and are using our Bio-Pilixin Serum to stimulate newly embedded hair follicles, reportedly with favourable results. However, individual experiences may vary, and professional medical advice should be your primary guide.

Others

Allergies

Bio-Pilixin® was patch tested under dermatological control on a group of 25 volunteers with normal skin. In the tested group of volunteers there were no irritations or allergic reactions. That said, any ingredient can cause allergic reactions, so we recommend performing a patch test before using our products or consulting a healthcare professional when in doubt.

Unlike typical pointed bristles that can scratch and pull, the Scalp Massager's flattened tips are designed to massage gently without tugging.

The Scalp Massager is made from 100% medical-grade silicone free from impurities and irritants, making it suitable for sensitive scalps. For superior hygiene, it's non-porous and solid throughout, so bacteria is less likely to build up on the surface or hide in a hollow center.

Not essential, but many find it far more convenient. The ergonomic design means you can massage for 5-15 minutes without hand fatigue, and the flattened bristle tips make it easier to maintain consistent pressure, making it a truly relaxing daily ritual.

Yes! The flexible silicone bristles are gentle on fine hair, thick hair, and everything in between.

Rinse with warm water and mild soap after each use. Its solid, non-porous design ensures easy cleaning and lasting hygiene.

With proper care, the high-quality silicone is durable and designed to last for years.

How to use Scalp massager?

Massage for 5-15 minutes to relieve stress and prime your scalp.

For enhanced results, follow up with our Bio-Pilixin® Serum according to its instructions.

Scalp Massager

"Excellent as it’s rubber and not sharp on my scalp"

Nice massager

"Nice soft feel for my delicate scalp, easy to use and easy to clean. Much better for my hair than traditional brushes that end up breaking my hair. Would definitely recommend."

Isma S. (5/5)

Super product

"Really nice to use and my scalp feels really stimulated"

Anne F. (5/5)

Great massager

"I bought this thinking it might be better than the one I bought for £4.00 from Boots Pharmacy. It’s exactly the same but for £14.00. No big deal. Now I have two; one for home and one for my swimming bag."

Gerald C. (5/5)

Increase the burn!

"The scalp massager works really well in conjunction with Bio-Pilixin Activation Serum for me. I currently have a fully shaven head and the massager helps the serum absorb into the scalp. If I don't use the massager, the 'burn affect' is less, so a assume it is doing something and messengering the serum into the hair follicle's. Time will tell, only 1 weeks in..."

Ben (5/5)

Scalp massager

"I can't comment on the effectiveness of the serum yet, it's still early days (2 weeks in) but the scalp massager makes the application much more effective than using fingers. The pointed tips get it right into the scalp and a possible unintended benefit is you can see what hair is being shed with it being white, that seems to have drastically reduced over the first couple of weeks so maybe the regime is having an early effect."

Dave T. (5/5)

Recommended

"Easy to use, very comfortable on the scalp. I use it before and after applying the serum"

Brian (5/5)

Love this item!

"Really good quality product! Nice and relaxing to use at the start and end of everyday! I use with the serum and it’s great to massage it into my scalp with the massager!"
